26 Nov Living in a Tiny House in Ibiza
As of writing this post we live on Ibiza for a little bit over 3 years. From the start we tried to live as natural as possible and in a way that would allow us to do the most of things we really love to do. Living small enables this in various ways. Although this list is nowhere near comprehensive and there are many more reasons to live small I will name 4 that I have experienced to be real game changers.
- The cost of living is lower and hence our total fixed living costs as well. Compared to our ¨previous life¨ we only need to work about 20% of the time to pay for our fixed costs and that leads to a whole lot of time to enjoy each other, our dogs, the outdoors and many hikes.
- A small house is cleaned very quickly.
So when corine,So when we are cleaning the house, it is done in literally half an hour!
- Living small requires you to think conciously about the stuff you buy as there is not room for everything. This may be challenging in the beginning or may feel restrictive to people but is in fact very liberating. Once you start thinking about what you really need, you also need to think about what it is that you really want. Clarifying this for yourself is a very insightful process and made us aware of the things that we don’t need and act as a mere distraction of the goals that we do want to reach.
- Living small aligns with my ethical views about how I want to live on our planet. I believe it is possible to have an absolutely great and happy life without leaving a destructive foot print on our world.
Getting to where we are now has not been an easy process. It was a process of learning. With limited distractions you get challenged by yourself about what it is that you want to do. Scrolling on Facebook all day long wasn’t an option. Having no TV or other distractions you will get to moments where you have absolutely nothing to do. These moments are very valuable but didn’t feel so in the beginning. It’s funny to see how we have lost our ability to do nothing while that is very important for the development of ourselves and our minds. It reminds me of a saying I heard a few years ago. I don’t know who said it, but it goes like this: In a world where everybody is in a hurry, patience is a valuable asset. Patience you will learn when you start living small as you will have less to worry about!
We also learned a lot about each other as we are sharing a lot of time together on a very small area. Although we certainly had our challenges it has definetely made our relationship much stronger and deeper. Living small was sometimes also difficult as our actions didn’t align with expectations of others. However, being where we are now I can say that living small is absolutely liberating! I´m done writing now with this post and since there’s absolutely nothing to do in the house anymore I go out for one more hike 🙂 Happy living!
